The Roane County Schools Director of Personnel is responsible for recruiting, hiring and retaining personnel making recommendations to the Superintendent for all personnel actions, including the hiring, transfers, resignations, reductions in force, and promotions of professional, service and extracurricular personnel. The Director of Personnel implements the Beginning Educator Internship program. He recruits substitute teachers and service personnel, while training and testing various service personnel classifications. He also maintains current seniority lists for personnel according to statutory requirements and school district needs.

John Putnam is the Director of Personnel for Roane County Schools. He has sixteen years of experience in education which began as science teacher at Geary Elementary Middle School and Chemistry/Physics teacher at Roane County High School. Mr. Putnam has served the West Virginia Department of Education as Science Coordinator and also worked as a Senior Research and Development Specialist under the U.S. Department of Education serving state departments of education across the Appalachians. Mr. Putnam returned home to Roane County Schools in 2009, serving as Principal of Walton Elementary Middle School and later as District Transformation Specialist at Geary where he began his career in education.

Mr. Putnam began employment as Director of Personnel in August of 2011 and is devoted to the recruiting and retaining of employees capable of providing Roane County children a world class education.
